The type specimen used for original description is cited from Dorey.

Sphingnotus mirabilis (Boisduval, 1835) is the full name of the group-species in the taxonomic classification system.

The species divided into 7 subspecies, is combined with the Sphingnotus genus ranked in the Tmesisternini tribe of Lamiinae.
