The type specimen used for original description is cited from (121-MEX) Neotropical Mexico.

Hypomia mexicana Thomson, 1868 is the full name of the group-species in the taxonomic classification system.

The species is combined with the Hypomia genus ranked in the Pogonocherini tribe of Lamiinae.
