The type specimen used for original description comes from Raja Ampat Is., Misool.

Trigonoptera sordida (Pascoe, 1867) is the full name of the group-species in the taxonomic classification system.

The species is combined with the Trigonoptera genus ranked in the Tmesisternini tribe of Lamiinae.
