The type specimen used for original description comes from Raja Ampat Is., Saylee.

Tmesisternus dissimilis Pascoe, 1868 is the full name of the group-species in the taxonomic classification system.

The species is combined with the Tmesisternus genus ranked in the Tmesisternini tribe of Lamiinae.
