The type specimen used for original description comes from Himalayan India.

Tetraophthalmus (Tetraophthalmus) violaceipennis Thomson, 1857 is the full name of the group-species in the taxonomic classification system.

The species is combined with the Tetraophthalmus genus ranked in the Astathini tribe of Lamiinae.
