The type specimen used for original description comes from Brazil, Rio de Janeiro.

Pyrobolus melancholicus (Melzer, 1931) is the full name of the group-species in the taxonomic classification system.

The species is combined with the Pyrobolus genus ranked in the Hemilophini tribe of Lamiinae.
