L.A. Chevrolat is the author of the original taxon.

The type specimen used for original description is cited from Vieux Calabar.

Phryneta coeca coeca Chevrolat, 1857 is the full name of the group-subspecies in the taxonomic classification system.

The group is the nominal subdivision of Phryneta coeca, species combined with the Phryneta genus ranked in the Phrynetini tribe of Lamiinae.
